Legend by Marie Lu Summary and Review

Legend is great dystopian about Day and June, two sides of the same coin, spinning in an epic cat and mouse chase. Day is a poor boy who’s supposed to be dead. Not only that, but he’s also the Republic’s greatest nemesis. He’s always going around trying to upset the perfect balance that the government has created. But, unlike the Republic, he reaps terror, but he never takes lives. This is where June comes in. Junes older brother, Metias, had to go and try to capture Day. In the process, he is murdered. All the evidence points to Day, but he is one hundred percent sure that he didn’t kill him, but instead had stabbed him in the shoulder. June, infuriated, steps up and volunteers to hunt down Day and find them, and then to watch while he is executed. Mrs. Lu writes this story impeccably. There are so many remarkable details that make this story so great. The plot is a perfect blend between a romantic thriller and an insightful philosophical story to make you think. There are so many twists and turns, it was a little hard to keep up, but this kept it so it was harder than usual to guess what was about to happen next in the story. I couldn’t really connect with the characters, but had a fun time imagining what it would be like to be in world like the one portrayed in Marie Lu’s writing. What truly makes Marie Lu’s writing great are the details, the little snips and cuts that a normal writer would edit out, but Marie Lu kept. Usually it would make it a heavy read, but this way it feels natural and leaves a sweet taste on the tongue.

In conclusion, I give Legend a 4 out of 5 in terms of recommendation, and a 3.5 out of 5 in terms of how well it was written. It is one of those books that people get addicted to, but can’t be compared to the timeless thrillers like Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, Ender’s Game, and other fiction classics.
