The Gone series by Michael Grant is an incredibly easy read that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The story follows the lives of several characters such as Sam Temple, Astrid, Quinn, and many others trapped under a dome they call the FAYZ. The FAYZ, however, has no one over the age of 15 except for those that resist the temptation on their birthday. With no adult guidance everyone’s problems quickly shift from not having TV to the shortage of food. Even with the small number of people that go to work it is hard to scrape together enough when the field of farms are guarded by flesh-eating worms. Not only that but they must somehow fight off the gaiaphage, an alien monster, who is able to manipulate anyone to his will. Then with deadly sicknesses no one has ever seen before going around the entire town how will they manage to survive?
I found this series to be one of my favorite ever. The characters are very relatable (keep in mind I’m in high school) but are also very unique individuals. This is a great mix of sci-fi action and suspenseful drama. Michael Grant often switches perspectives to different characters which is a really cool style for this book. This allows him to use different characters to focus on different issues he thinks are important or central to that character. If you enjoy books that are fast-paced, dramatic, and full of action (this includes everything from fiery lasers to telekinesis) then I strongly recommend these books.
