The book Guyaholic by Carolyn Mackler is about a young girl named Vivian Valentine. Vivian has spent her life moving around from place to place as her single mother traveled endlessly with each new boyfriend. As the novel takes off, Vivian (or V) comes to live in Brockport, New York with her grandparents. Although V hasn’t always been the most qualified student, she soon graduates with an acceptance to the prestigious school of Boston University. As her last summer after high school begins, V meets a handsome guy named Sam. Sam is sweet, and kind, and embodies everything in a guy that V wants. However, V has a problem. She likes to be reckless with guys and her relationships are often based with a “no strings” guideline. In meeting Sam, he challenges her to let herself truly love somebody and acquire a steady relationship. Sam wants a relationship with V, but she cannot seem to adjust to the idea of commitment. When Sam learns V has cheated on him with her former flame, Amos, he flees to California for the summer in heartbreak. V is crushed and accepts her mistake as she takes on a road trip to see her mother in Texas. In her quest, she encounters many obstacles and questions as she tries to find herself and the true meaning she can’t accept steady love in her life. This book is filled with countless drama, love, hate, and excitement, as V takes on her own adventure as a “Guyaholic.”
