CEMETERY BOYS – Aiden Thomas

by TPS reader tanelianl26

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas is a great book! This book is about a boy named Yadriel who wants to become a brujo. A brujo is someone who can see spirits and help them cross over, and most of Yadriel’s entire family is made up of brujos and brujas. The reason why he still isn’t an official brujo is that his family won’t accept him because he’s trans. The only other outcast in the family is Yadriel’s uncle, Tio Catriz. Determined to become a true brujo, Yadriel performs the brujo ritual himself.

Another power that a brujo has is to feel when a person in their family dies. When Yadriel becomes aware that his cousin, Miguel, has died, he decides to use his newly ordained powers to summon his ghost. However, he accidentally summons a different ghost– the very confused ghost of Julian Diaz, the school’s Bad Boy™. After being told the unfortunate news that he is dead, Julian decides that he needs to know exactly what happened to him. Yadriel comes to the conclusion that he needs to help Julian, so that they can both get what they want. Much later in the book, they start to get closer, until they finally find out the truth about not only Julian, but Miguel as well.

This book is full of action, secrets, and spirits, with a touch of romance. In addition to the already gripping plot, I really enjoyed reading about Latinx culture, and if you like a good plot twist, this book has it too.
